Doyle’s exposure has definitely decreased in the months following Black Friday.  After disassociating himself with the online poker room that bore his name, the Internet heard little from Doyle, a notable lack given how prolific he had become via both his blog and Twitter updates.

That led some to speculate that Doyle might be hanging up the old card protector after countless decades at the top of the game he helped make a mainstream phenomenon.  It turns out, however, that Texas Dolly had just refocused his sights on the live high stakes games, his family, and his health.

In his latest blog, Doyle sounds upbeat, even chipper, as he talks about the flood of high stakes poker money that’s currently rolling into Vegas.  His only complaint?  He wishes the kids would lay less exotic games so that recreational players would feel more comfortable sitting in.  Apparently Badugi isn’t the best way to reel casual players into your game.  As for online play, Doyle was never that interested in the high stakes real money online poker games even at their peak, so Black Friday didn’t change his plans much, if at all, in that regard.

What Doyle didn’t address was his plans for this year’s World Series of Poker.  It’s too soon to say that he’ll be skipping the series, but one suspects that the lure of the cash games during the WSOP may be so strong as to move Doyle over to that side of the fence.  While we expect that he will at least play the Main Event and the Chip Reese Memorial, don’t be surprised if those are two on a very short list of WSOP events on Doyle’s dance card in 2012.

Will Doyle return to online poker?  That’s an even trickier question, but it seems likely that the only path back to online poker for Doyle would be via a regulated US entity like Caesar’s.  Doyle is one of the few poker names recognizable to a general audience, so his services will certainly be in demand –  assuming he’s interested when the time comes.

At present, however, the room has been shuttered and former Doyle’s players have been migrated to America’s Card Room.  While ACR has a solid reputation as well, many players are simply curious as to what the future might bring for the room once fronted by arguably the most famous player in the history of poker: Doyle Brunson.

Quick back story

Doyle’s Room actually has a fairly lengthy history, having been a part of nearly a half a dozen poker networks since the room’s inception in the early part of the 2000′s.  Toward the end of the room’s lifespan, Doyle’s jumped from Cake Poker to the Yatahay Network (now known as the Winning Poker network) before finally closing up shop.

Will Doyle ever return to US?

USA players have always been the biggest fans of Doyle’s and it’s not hard to understand why.  To many people in the US, Doyle is poker –  so any room bearing his name on a list of poker rooms for USA players is going to be very attractive.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if Doyle has any plans to bring the room back at all, let alone back to the US.  That means players who want a chance to tangle with one of the game’s best will have to travel to Vegas to take a shot.

What’s next for Doyle?

That’s an interesting question.  With his room closed and the years adding up, many are wondering if Doyle is plotting his retirement more than he’s plotting his next run at a World Series of Poker bracelet.  Whatever he does, there’s one thing we can be sure of –  he’ll likely do it with class.

That attitude changed, however, when a series of events collided and knocked the game of poker into a new orbit.

More changes are afoot at the new home of what was Doyle’s Room (now branded as Americas Card Room).  The Yatahay Network, one of the older online poker networks, has changed their name to Winning Poker Network.

We’ll admit, it is a good deal catchier.  It was never quite clear what Yatahay meant, and the name never really seemed to stick among online poker players.  While “Winning Poker” is a little generic, it won’t be confused with any of the current major online poker networks and does seem easier to brand than Yatahay.

What does this change mean for players?  Players should actually see no impact whatsoever from the change.  You will still be able to play poker online for money at ACR, True Poker, or any of the rooms that make up the network.

The partner rooms of the network will all maintain their existing branding, and the software will also stay the same.  In fact, players will be unlikely to notice any change at all except perhaps some small text updates in the poker client and on their room’s webpage.

What’s behind the change?  There was no official word from the company on the motivation for the change, and any attempt to speculate on the underlying rationale would be just that –  speculation.  While it’s not common for networks to completely re-brand, it is also not unheard of –  and the impact of the re-branding will likely be more significant for potential partner rooms than for online poker consumers.

Are there likely to be any negative impacts for the company as a result of the change?  Not really –  it seems like mostly upside for WPN / Yatahay.  They get a fresh brand that seems a bit more relatable, and anyone who plays at the room will experience a seamless transition.  If only everything in the online poker business was so simple.

But, firstly – we should say that it’s not without its members, as there are still more than enough people who are ready and willing to take you on, as you should easily be able to find a game without much effort. This includes Hold’em, Omaha, or whatever it is you’ll want to play. You have the option of playing for fun, or if you want something a bit more intense – you can also play for real money, and like other sites, the competition will be just as stiff as you’re expecting it to be.

But, the community and the wide range of content are two things that separate this from a lot of the other sites out there. While these things are definitely not exclusive to PokerRoom, they can be a wealth of information for those who are looking to get into online poker, as well as for those people who are trying to sharpen their game. Choosing a room is definitely a personal decision, and players are unlikely to feel as attached to another room the way they felt attached to Doyle’s.  While the future is never certain, one does suspect that the days of being able to play at a room headed up by the affable Texan have permanently drawn to a close.
